Federal programs provide scholarship and loan repayment for many health professional occupations. Working at a CHC meets eligibility requirements for these programs. The goal of the National Health Service Corps is to expand access to health care services and improve the health of people who live in urban and rural areas where health care is scarce. The NHSC recruits a variety of primary care, dental, and mental health providers who are dedicated to serve communities in need.
More than 50 million Americans live in places where health professionals are hard to find. NHSC clinicians are on the job today in rural, frontier, and inner-city communities across the United States, providing primary and preventative health care in underserved areas. Oklahoma has more than 40 sites qualifying for National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment.
NHSC Loan Repayment Program
To be eligible for up to $60,000 in an initial loan repayment award Corps members are required to practice full-time for at least two years or part-time for four years at an NHSC-approved site. An award of $30,000 is available for two years of half-time service. Approved sites are located across the country in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).
NHSC Scholarship Program
The National Health Service Corps scholarship pays tuition, required fees, and some other education costs, tax free, for as many as four years. Education costs may include books, clinical supplies, laboratory expenses, instruments, two sets of uniforms and travel for one clinical rotation. Recipients also receive a monthly living stipend ($1,289 in 2010-2011). The stipend is taxable.
